Our Philosophy

Our Commitments

Tannum Sands Kindergarten strives to provide a warm friendly, sustainable and safe environment for all families, children, community and staff. We are committed to working in partnership with our families to foster the best for each individual child; promoting learning, confidence, friendship and growth in a warm and caring environment.

Our engaging indoor and beautifully appointed outdoor environment allows children to explore, connect with nature, discover, question and experiment on their kindergarten journey. We build upon children’s natural curiosity and appreciation of the environment by providing authentic opportunities to connect with nature and learn about sustainability within the kindy, community and through our Beach Kindy program. The team at Tannum Sands Kindergarten are committed and dedicated individuals who participate in ongoing training and learning in order to offer the best educational setting for the children in their care. They also work hard to empower our families and foster a sense of partnership in their child’s learning.

Our Children

Our children are highly valued and their happiness, security and feelings of self –worth are developed through participation in the kindergarten program, positive interactions with adults, teachers and peers. Personal growth and development is fostered by engaging in planned and spontaneous experiences that are within the framework of the curriculum. To feel safe, secure, valued, welcomed, respected and listened to enables them to feel supported and celebrated through their kindergarten journey. Our children are encouraged to be actively involved in the planning of the program. We believe that through sharing their ideas and seeing them implemented gives the children a sense of ownership and greater engagement in the kindergarten program. Our children will develop emotionally, physically and cognitively when involved in learning experiences that reflect all areas of the curriculum and when they have a sense of belonging to our Kindergarten community. Through mindfulness education we help children to understand their emotions, connect with nature and the environment and learn to express gratitude. As they grow they will develop skills, knowledge and attitudes required to positively contribute to their own interests and as a member of their community.

Our Families

We believe in creating a place where families feel welcomed, supported, safe and secure. Their input is valued and their ideas and concerns are listened to and respected. They are provided with the opportunity to contribute ideas to the Quality Improvement Plan. It is our desire to create a place where families are welcome any day, any time. We understand and respect the diverse and cultural make up of our families and do our best to support and make all our families feel welcomed. We make a conscious effort to know all family members from grandparents, uncles and aunties, to younger and older siblings. We endeavour to create an atmosphere where families interact with and help each other. Friendships and connections are formed when our families work together to create gardens, family photo walls and attend special events at our Kindergarten such as Father’s nights or sports days.

We strive to develop a culture of partnership with our families with the child’s best interest at its core. We do this through acknowledging our families as the child’s first teacher and encourage them to share their goals for their child through the kindy year. We also encourage our families to share their interests and talents with the children and to be a part of the Kindergarten program as much as possible.

Our Curriculum

We proudly offer a play-based program delivered through the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline and Early Years Learning Framework, where children encounter opportunities to explore, discover, problem solve, create and experience curiosity, perseverance and risk-taking. Through extended periods of uninterrupted flexible play, we allow children to experience the joy of building and maintaining relationships with their peers and working through everyday challenges of life. We reflect on The Early Years Learning Framework when we celebrate the sense of belonging children have first with their families, cultural groups and wider community. We acknowledge the significance of children being in the here and now and are mindful of who children are becoming as they progress through a period of rapid growth and change in the early years. Adults and children share responsibility for the learning process through interaction, negotiation and collaboration. We aim to instil social awareness and empathy towards others and care and respect for the environment.

Inclusivity

We believe all children have the right to experience kindergarten life regardless of their physical, intellectual, religious, cultural or social standing. We strive to embrace diversity, to be all inclusive and to create an environment free of discrimination or bias. We aim to provide an environment that is physically and emotionally supportive of inclusion and diversity, a place where everyone feels welcomed, safe, secure and supported, where individual needs are met to the best of our abilities.

Our Indigenous Culture and Multiculturalism

Tannum Sands Kindergarten acknowledges the traditional landowners, the Goreng Goreng, Gurang, Byelle and Taribelang Bunda People, and seek to embed awareness, acceptance and understanding of our country’s first people and their deep connection to the land upon which we now reside. We embrace and welcome all cultures that now call Australia home and encourage our families to celebrate and share their cultural beliefs. We seek to give the children many experiences that will support their understanding of Australia’s cultural diversity and the importance of being respectful and inclusive to all people.

Our Community

Tannum Sands Kindergarten first opened its doors in 1981 and enjoys a strong emotional connection with not only its immediate Kindergarten community of families but also with the wider community of Boyne/Tannum. Our Kindergarten is a community service that strives to build a strong sense of connection and community amongst its families who attend each year. We also value the many wonderful services provided by our wider community and work to facilitate a strong connection with these. We do this by providing information about these services to our families and also through visits from community groups such as local emergency services, Conservation Volunteers Australia and the local wildlife carer. Through our Beach Kindy program, we have developed connections with the local Surf Lifesaving Club and collaborate annually with local artists to add artworks, reflective of our beach environment, to the kindy building and grounds.
